Study Teams in an Academic Environment
BSA 313 Management Theory and PracticeThe use of "Teams" in the workplace has become more and more common; mostorganizations find that teams enhance productivity and workplace performance. Another placethat teams have become more common is in the academic arena; especially in Graduate andProfessional Studies type college programs such as those offered by Averett University. The text book definition for a team is a "number of people with complementary skillswho are committed to a common purpose, a set of performance goals, and an approach for whichthey hold themselves mutually accountable". (Gomez-Mejia and Balkin, 2002). One of the firsttasks accomplished by any student upon enrolling in a program like Averett's is the formation ofstudy teams, this say this was an interesting experience would be an understatement, the clusteris made up of individuals from diverse backgrounds, experiences and levels of education. It wasfurther complicated by the fact that some students had previously worked with others in theThe common goal for all the students in our cluster and in our team is to graduate fromAverett with a Bachelors Degree in December 2003. Most of the3internal conflict falls can be said to be functional conflict. The syllabus posed a question concerning how we would deal with a "nonconforminghigh performer" (Bolton, 2002). We wouldrecognize that he/she was performing at a higher level than we were, and would indicate that weall could use his/her help to raise our level of performance. This praise would serve to give him4the recognition he/she feels is due (and probably desires). When we enrolled in the program, like all of the other study teams we developed a codeof conduct and a constitution, that clearly identified what was expected of each of us and whatthe consequences of failing to live up to these expectations would be. Like any other team wehave had problems with conflict, both internal to our group and with other groups. Almost half way through the course now, we have managed to maintain trust and respectfor each other. Byfollowing the guidelines we established in the beginning we have been able to stay on track, whilst every person has a voice on our team, we also have a majority rule provision that is usedto settle disputes/differences when they arise. Atdifferent times we have all become "burned out" and some of us have discussed dropping fromthe course. But we would have to remind him/herthat we were a team. Bolton, F (2002) Course Syllabus, BSA 313. We have all had problems with our work or families too, but each time wehave been able to help the team through. When this has occurred the team has come together to provide support for everyone, whether simply by listening to the member or by actively discussing alternatives and offeringrecommendations.
