One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest

The class novel we read was Ken Kesey's One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest. The novelwas basically written about an Asylum and the powerful Randle Patrick McMurphy, apatient who would rather be in a Mental Institution than the slammer. In the Asylum hechanged the atmosphere in the ward, he change the thoughts of the what he liked to callthe "loonies", which were the other mental patients. He also had the willpower to over Ken Kesey's use of symbolism in One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest changes thenovel itself and the Asylum in to a small universe, which deals with a battle between thesane and the insane. Which would be, Randle Patrick McMurphy vs. Big Nurse Ratched, the conformist and the nonconformist. When McMurphy entered the doors of the loonybin, he changed the lives of almost everybody, whether it was a patient or an employee. Iwas not quite sure if his motives and actions were intended for good, or bad. He hadsaved the patients from losing their souls. That is one example of a good hero. WithoutMcMurphy, the other patients would not have been able to stand up for themselves or beable to appreciate themselves. But, on the other hand, Big Nurse Ratched made

Hethinks everything out by himself and works through any conflicts that come to him. Big Chief killed Randle Patrick McMurphy as a duty as a friend. He was brass, not afraid to speak hismind, and desparate for attention. McMurphy constantly worked his maddness on Nurse Ratched. Before RandleMcMurphy came to the Asylum, these trips would never have happened, even if theywanted to go. The role each patientplays in this fight for freedom symbolizes the real confrontations between the mentallyinsane and the rest of the society. You can'tjudge a man by his imprisonment. McMurphy's death showed the ultimate sacrifice that he is willing to showhis friends what kind of suffocating environment they choose to live in. He would alwaystry to over power her. Randle McMurphy is a con-man, he is constantly making bets with naive, mentally illmen, because he knows he will win. McMurphy is street smart, and street tough. Big Cheif ended up over powering the Big Nurse in the end, because he is the onlyone who escapes. Another character I want to emphizise a little bit on is Big Chief. Nurse Ratched should be a metaphore for a "castorating female",she cuts the life, and will power from each of the men.
