Illegal Anabolic Steroids

Illegal anabolic steroids are drugs made from the male sex hormone, testosterone. They promote muscle growth and increase lean body mass. Anabolic steroids have many approved medicinal uses, but many teenagers who use them to improve their athletic performance and physical appearance also abuse them. While the outside appearance may look good, what many teenagers do not know is that steroids can cause permanent damage to the human body.

This paper will go over naturally produced steroids, synthetically produced anabolic steroids and review both the negative physical and psychological effects of anabolic steroids on teenagers.

Steroids are a class of hormones synthesized from cholesterol. All steroids share the same basic four-ring carbon structure, but are different in the number of carbon atoms attached to the number 17 carbon atom in the structure, and in the number in which hydrogen (H), oxygen (O), and the hydroxyl (OH) groups are attached to the carbon atoms. A steroid, known as corticosteroid, is an anti-inflammatory and breaks tissue down. This is different from the steroid known as anabolic. Anabolic steroids usually refer to synthetically produced steroids, which are derivatives of testosterone. Natural testost

One of the main changes is increased protein synthesis and nitrogen retention, which leads to increased size and strength of the muscle cell.

Most steroids will cause water retention and electrolyte storage in the muscles, resulting in a swelling of body tissues. This is characterized by testicular atrophy and decreased sperm production, which temporarily results in infertility.

Steroids convert largely into DHT. This is usually brought on by the use of steroids with high androgenic characteristics in high doses over a long period of time.

Primarily in females, virilization will result in masculine characteristics.

Along with all the big muscles and lean bodies when anabolic steroids are taken, there are just as many if not more negative side effects; physically and mentally. However anabolics have an anticatabolic effect and prevent the breakdown of muscle tissue by displacing cortisol. Teens who already have acne will tend see their conditions worsen. “Roid Rage” is the descriptive term for steroid-induced “spontaneously, highly aggressive, out of control behavior where the police either were called or should have intervened. Usually this is no such a bad side effect due to the increase in muscle size and strength.

Another risk that can occur with needle users of steroids are that sometimes people take injections of steroids to enhance oral doses.

Anabolic steroids can raise blood androgen levels higher than what the body naturally produces.
