Drug, food, and alcohol addictions within the family

Throughout the world, addictions are present in practically everyone. These addictions may come in a wide variety and can be extremely difficult to overcome. An addiction is defined as being abnormally dependent on something that is psychologically or physically habit forming and has an abnormally strong craving (Dictionary.com, 2004). The following report will present to the reader several different types of addictions within the family including drug, food, and gambling. Also included will be several solutions on how to overcome these addictions. Drug addictions can be very harmful to both parents and children and can have long lasting effects. These addictions can range from mild to severe, and can include the use of both legal and illegal substances. Mild Pharmaceutical drugs can be purchased without prescription from a doctor, and although they may seem harmless, they can often lead to serious problems. There are several types of these drugs, with the most popular being Aspirin (minor pain killer). The generic name for Aspirin is Acetylsalicylic Acid (ASA), which is used to treat pain, headache, and fevers. It may also be used to relieve certain types of arthritic pa

It is actually possible to become overly addicted to food which then leads to obesity. Marijuana however is much milder than the previous drugs mentioned but still causes bodily harm and short term memory loss. These drugs are also known as 'pain killers' and can become severely addictive if frequently used. Gambling is extremely popular in the United States of America. A good portion of the revenue which is generated within the state comes from Casinos which offer various gambling activities. However there are several solutions families with addictions can take into consideration if attempting to overcome an addiction. Gambling can become very serious in the family, especially if the parents are both addicted and have children. If a parent is obese it can influence the child to not care for their body, and the parent can have an early death if the level of obesity is serious enough. Drug addictions are often overcome by group meetings so the individual does not feel like he or she is the only one that suffers from the disorder. Cocaine is a stimulant which is inhaled through the nose, and can also be smoked in its current form, or altered form which is known as crack. Children in particular are very prone to drug and alcohol abuse if the parents aren't careful about who their children spend time with. Parents and children who suffer from illegal drug addictions often find themselves arguing, getting into physical fights, and in many cases even having to leave the house for days, months, or even years to recuperate from their illness. Researchers at the Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) and two other institutions suggest that the same mental circuitry is involved in the highs and lows of winning money, abusing drugs, or anticipating a tasty meal (Gambling, drugs, and munchies, 2004). If the leader is a drug or alcohol user there is a good chance they will influence the others to participate in the same activities in which they do. Finally gambling can be resolved in several ways, however the easiest and most frequently used method is to entrust someone with your paychecks and only allow you to withdraw a certain amount each week.
