Physician-assisted suicide occurs when a physician
facilitates a patient's death by providing the necessary
means and/or information to enable the patient to
perform the life-ending act (Physician-Assisted
Suicide). Physician-assisted suicide is illegal in most
states with the only exception being Oregon.
Unfortunately, physician-assisted suicide has been
gaining support over the past half century in the United
States. Although physician-assisted suicide has been
gaining support, physician-assisted suicide is wrong
and should not be practiced in the United States. One
of the main issues against physician-assisted suicide is
that some complications could lead to further injury
and more pain than the terminally ill patient is already
suffering. Additionally, another main issue in
physician-assisted suicide is the debate over palliative
care options available to the terminally ill patient.
Furthermore, depression often leads to the terminally ill
to request assisted suicide. These are all very
important issues that need to be considered in the
debate over physician-assisted suicide.
Those in favor of physician-assisted suicide believe
that assisted suicide alleviates the pain and suffering of
not only the patient, but also the family of the patient.
