The notebook

             The Notebook, by Nicholas Sparks, is a touching story about the never ending passion of true love. This book tells the story of Noah and Allie, a young couple from the South. This young couple shares one enchanted summer together, which could not last, because of social differences, but remained in their hearts for fourteen years. Once again, they are magically reunited, only to remain that way for the rest of their lives. This book focuses on the reuniting of Allie and Noah, and also the struggle which they encounter at the end of their lives.
             The main theme of this book is about love. This story begins when Noah and Allie are in a nursing home, eighty years into their life. Noah goes back in time to tell the story of him and Allie, and how they came to be together. The sharing of one's personal story is a common method of coping for the elder. They like to tell their legacy, because, "it allows one to gain a clearer perspective on how one's existence has had enduring meaning" (Ebersole & Hess, 64). The legacy is expressed from Noah's memories and also letter's which were written from both him and Allie to each other. Noah had a passion for poetry, which he shared with Allie. When Noah looks back on his first meeting with Allie he recalled it as being, "a tornado wind, and before he took his next breath that she was the one he could spend the rest of his life looking for but never find again" (Sparks, 13). After their one summer together, Allie returned to her hometown, never to see Noah, or talk to him again, until one day she read an article about him in the paper fourteen years later, and three weeks prior to her wedding to a lawyer. She is compelled to return to New Bern, where Noah lives, to find out the truth in her heart.
