The Mission
The Mission. The Catholic Church through the missions supported the European domination of the new world and during the 1750's where this movie took place. The influence that religion manifested in the indigenous created a new vision of life for them. The European government had its representation too; they were the Spaniards and Portuguese. These governments had their own interests that affected the indigenous. The archbishop was only a messenger for the religious community. These issues made the indigenous develop the strength to fight for their land with their lives. The missioners that were settled in this part of South America had to work hard as was shown in the movie. This area was in the border of Paraguay and Brazil where the Spanish and Portuguese were trying to obtain that land. The Jesuits were the missioners in these areas and they offered protection to the indigenous. The indigenous in this land were the Guaranis who lived in the jungle. In the beginning they did not accept any foreigners. They went as far as killing one missioner who tried to teach them another way of life. However, this situation did not stop the other missioners in their work of e
The archbishop was impressed by the Guaranis' behavior, which made him visit the missions to see for himself. This faith is still present and strong in the indigenous communities in all Latin America. Meanwhile, the kings of these two countries made an agreement about those territories. Although, the missioners and indigenous trusted the judgment of the archbishop, he already knew what he had planned for them. They learned to play musical instruments and worked hard on their own plantation. During the assembly, the archbishop had the opportunity to hear the three parties. Indigenous slavery was an excellent profit for the Spanish and Portuguese governors who made their own fortune. This statement did not have enough validity for the archbishop. The Portuguese ambitions for territories cost many lives. This destruction is not only affecting the Lacandones but the ecosystem as well. When the archbishop arrived to this part of the world, the missioners and the Guaranis thought that he came to see how the missions were working, because they were settled in Spanish territory. Each family was allowed to have only two children. The Guaranis decided to fight for their land rather than leave it for the Portuguese. This community is in danger of extinction, because the federal and local government do not show interest on them.
