Outbreak

“ The single biggest threat to man’s continues dominance is the virus.” In the movie Outbreak a hemorrhagic virus took the lives of many people in a matter of days. This deadly virus was called the Motaba virus. Even though the virus is so small compared to us it is amazing how it has the power to take down so many things that are so much larger than it self. The virus, the way it spreads, and the effect it has, directly relates to the material we have covered this year in biology.

The Motaba virus is a hemorrhagic disease in which your internal organs in a sense melt away which causes extreme internal bleeding. In the movie Outbreak the virus strikes in a small village at first and it kills its victims within 2-3 days. It attacks the immune system and multiplies very rapidly and all of your cells become infected. The virus directly infects humans because of the similarity between monkey and human genetics. Monkey and Human genetics are very similar when looking at and comparing their DNA. The reason why the virus transmitted so quickly to humans without having to mutate was because the DNA of humans and monkeys are so similar that there didn’t have to be any mutations in the virus for it to survive in the

. . .
Originally in the pet shop another monkey ate a banana, which the host was eating so the new monkey was also infected. In the village the people are infected by the first strain, which was transmitted by one infected person who drinks out of a well. This only cured the first strain because the 2nd monkey got cured yet no one else in Cedar Creek was getting cured. This vaccine only worked on people in the early stages of the disease because as the days passed there would be damaging to your organs and those cannot be fixed. Viruses can be transmitted through direct contact which in other words means that it can be transferred through having physical contact with an individual whom is sick, it can be passed through sexual contact as well as coming in contact with infected blood. Passive immunity is when animal’s antibodies are used to create a cure for the human. He then went to the hospital and infected the doctor that was testing his blood. The host has an antibody, which scientists can take out of it and make a cure for the disease.

The antigen normally would not be able to cure the disease because it kills your internal body and once the organs and cells are killed your body will not reproduce them. On the ride there the monkey spit water onto Jimbo’s face and some of it went into his mouth.

In Outbreak the first strain is transmitted through direct contact and the second strain is airborne. This is called passive immunity because they use the host’s antibodies to make a vaccine for the humans. There are two different strains of the virus, which mutate in the host, a monkey. This was because the second strand was the one that was infecting everyone is cedar creak. The vaccine is made up of antibodies which are proteins contained in a plasma membrane which can unite with an antigen to kill it.
