‘School Film’s’ Analysis
Teachers always bring change with them and Hollywood tried to capture this change in various movies about schools and teachers. “Dead Poets Society” (DPS) and “Stand and Deliver” (S&D) are two movies that showcase two different and simulatinsly similar stories about teachers who come with new ideals and principals for their students and face conflict that should be dealt with according to these ideals and principals. Dead Poets Society Stand and Deliver · set at Welton Academy for boys : scenes involving the teachers and students · set on-location at Garfield High in East LA. Most scenes 1. Mr. Keating: · the new English teacher · member of the old Dead Poets Society · follows unorthodox teaching methods.2. Todd Anderson: a new shy student. He tries to get out of his cocoon and succeeds at the end. 3. Neil Perry: an ‘A’ student who likes to participate in extra curricula activities like acting against his father’s wish. He decides to follow his dream and pays dearly with his life.4. Charlie Dalton: a rebel student 5. Knox: the romantic whose goal is to win the affection of a girl from the town 6. The students are split up between conformity and learning to think for themselves in a soul searching journey and end up with varied results. He was supposed to portray a charismatic teacher who inspires students with his ideals and knowledge. Beethoven’s 9th was played during the football game- reciting poetry game to show the romantic streak in the movie (Baker & Kemper 4). Conclusion There are different patterns for school movies but the most common one is having a new teacher that can add something to the students life as gathered from Dead Poets Society and Stand and Deliver where each teacher has something to add and teach. This diversity was created to illustrate how Keating was divers in his teaching ways as he’s not constricting knowledge to the classroom only and extends them to the outside world. The students are supposed to set goals and work hard to achieve them. Angel: a student snd a gang member who likes the tough guy image but thrives to be educated3. I had an English teacher who suffered from high blood pressure and diabetes at the same time but she always insisted on giving her best and providing fair learning opportunities for all her students regardless of their background and her illness. Escalatne, the hard working teacher with his well combed hair, can be any devoted math teacher in any school although this type can be rarely found but its real and original. Elements of film: how students and teachers are portrayed through: · Mise-en-scene “It translates as ‘put in the scene’” and “it refers to all the visual details a film-maker can include in the screen image” (Stewart et al 150). Music was used to build up anticipation and interest in what’s coming next and the noise of traffic and people’s speech in a Latino accent was added to present the viewer with the real life noise of East LA.
