Paddy’s Status at the end of the novel
In the novel Paddy Clarke Ha Ha Ha, the author presents a ten year-old boy whose life is described day by day. It consists of the playground, the school, and his family matters. The story is told from the boy’s point of view, where at the end of the novel his status is so different from the beginning. First of all, Paddy feels in some way confused by what is happening between his parents, because he does not feel any hatred toward any of them. On the other hand he does not like or completely understand what he is witnessing. He always asks himself “why ma does not like ma? She liked him; it was him didn’t like her. What was wrong with her?”(257) He hardly understands their love chemistry and how they interact with each other. In front of the children, his parents are rather silent and calm, but at night and in private, things seem to be different. Moreover, Paddy is also con . . .
Sometimes he would hit his brother for little stupid reasons, but at the same time he feels sorry for his actions. Not only does he have the best mother in his neighborhood, but also he was going to achieve more responsibility before the other kids. His parents’ fights, his confusion and his trouble at school with his friends have made a big difference in his life. No matter what is coming ahead, it seem as if he is ready to face it. For example, on page 257 Paddy demonstrates his confusion: “I’d probably hit him, maybe give him a dead leg for himself. ” Secondly, Paddy has a feeling of emptiness that evolved after his fight with former friend Kevin. Usually, in such incident when a parent is gone for a while, the child reacts with more anxiety, but in this case Paddy acts quite normal by simply answering “very well thank you”. He is willing to accept such responsibility without necessarily knowing what it is all about. This following passage identifies his emotion facing what he is going through: “There was a hole inside me for a bit; getting used to it. Finally, Paddy demonstrates a sense of maturity that has arrived earlier that supposed to. The fact of being the man of the house puts him on a higher level compared to the other children at his school. They boycotted him at school, but he does not give a damn to try to overcome this situation, since he is living in his own world now.
