Ender
The novel Ender’s Game is the first in a series of stories involving Andrew "Ender" Wiggin, by Orson Scott Card. At the young impressionable age of six, Ender is taken from the only world he has ever known, to Battle School. Later on at Command School, on the planet Eros, the teachers prepare him for the final battle with the buggers. He is taught that the buggers are his enemy and he has to destroy them in order to save humanity. Throughout the series, Ender is an intriguing character who as a child is a genius, is wholeheartedly devoted to his sister, but acts violent in situations when threatened. Ender is a bright young boy, despite the fact that he is a third and was requisitioned by the government to be born. Because of his advanced knowledge he is often bored with school. On the day Ender got his monitor taken out he kept looking for something and was preoccupied, "The teacher would know, of course, that he wasn’t paying attention, but she wouldn’t bother him. He always knew the answer, even when she thought he wasn’t paying attention" ( Ender’s 5 ). He quit looking for whatever it was he couldn’t remember and began to play with his computer, "It gave him something to do while the teacher droned on about arithmetic. Arith . . .
He is stuck between the life he had and the one he has sense coming to Battle School. Most of all he is sorry for all he has done and he promises somehow to make amends. The only difference that distinguishes Ender from Peter is that Ender feels remorse for the things he has done. Ender goes through a period where he doesn’t care about playing any games at school. Ender and Valentine are loving and are as close to each other as brother and sister could possibly be. Ender knew he had to win this battle once and for all but he, "… knew the unspoken rules of warfare, even though he was only six. Knowing that you could not turn back the hands of time and change the past. Ender has some rather puzzling traits that show his amazing intellect, the devotion he has to his sister, and the savagery he performs when in danger. After his monitor is taken out he realizes that he is on his own and no one can help him face the bullies after school. I lost mine before I was five’ ( Ender’s 10 ). Jakt knew it, too, and it caused him some pain; a husband shouldn’t have to compete with his brother-in-law for the devotion of his wife" ( Speaker 76 ). She realizes that Ender is determined to go to Luisitania and she feels a wash of dread come over her, "Much as she loved Jakt, she missed the constant closeness that she and Ender used to have before she was married. Why don’t they leave me alone, so I don’t have to hurt them?" ( Ender’s 115 ). If a six-year-old could break them down, they were obviously put there as a plaything, not serious security" ( Ender’s 52 ). They were all wondering if he was dead.
