Human Rights
When two people love each other, they should be allowed the same rights, privileges, and responsibilities, regardless of their gender. David and Ian, a gay couple who are patients of my mom's chiropractic office, were in love so deeply that they decided to get married. Last summer they held a lavish ceremony on the coast of New Jersey, with all their friends and family in attendance. David's dad, a minister, officiated the ceremony. Ian's dad wrote and sang a special song. After the reception, the two headed off to their honeymoon in Queensland, Australia. When they returned, they felt like a married couple. They moved in together, opened their gifts, and started talking about adopting a baby. Even though the couple feels committed to each other, they have none of the legal rights that protect a heterosexual marriage. If David becomes ill, Ian is not guaranteed the right to be with him in the hospital. If Ian dies, his distant nieces and nephews have more of a claim to his belongings than David does. They file "single" on their tax returns and are not allowed to be on each other's health plans. The Canadian government ruled on June 10th, 2003, to overturn the laws that prevented same sex couples from marrying. Ameri
Preventing a loving same-sex couple from making a legal commitment to each other not only hurts them, the couple, but their children as well. Whatever they decide should not matter because separation of church and state is essential to the freedom enjoyed by Americans. However, California law also states that only marriage between a man and a woman will be recognized. I, personally, can not make any sense out of the idea that a legal marriage between David and Ian could have any negative impact between my husband and me, much less, undermine our marriage. However, if the determined gay couple were to end in divorce, they would not constitute a very large portion of the divorce rates. These point of views are reminiscent of the arguments against interracial marriages fifty years ago, in which, it will harm children, send the wrong moral message, and devalue the institution of marriage. Gay and lesbian couples already have children without the benefit of marriage. Recent Statistics suggest that 50% of all marriages will end in divorce. " Finding a way to explain the legal system to a five year old is very difficult. However, many couples will marry and not have children: gay or straight. More and more it is looking like same-sex marriages may become a reality. Three days after the Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney said he would veto gay marriage legislation, President Bush released the following statement: "Marriage is an institution between a man and a woman.
