American History X is a profound and stirring drama about the consequences of racism as a family is torn apart by hate. The film follows one man's struggle to reform him and save his brother after living a life consumed by violence and bigotry. The story unfolds through the eyes of Danny Vinyard, who idolizes his older brother Derek. Seeking retribution for his father's murder and burning for a way to vent his rage, Derek finds himself transformed by a philosophy of hate as he turns into a charismatic leader of a local white power movement. Despite his intelligence, his actions culminate in a brutal murder and, ultimately, a prison sentence. On the day of Derek's release from prison, Danny hands in a book report on Mein Kampf. Fresh from prison, he no longer has the same views of hatred he had before the incident. The racism portrayed in this movie is not overly violent because there is things a lot worse happening. As Derek took of his shirt you could see his hatred and beliefs in form of tattoos, the most apparent on being the swastika on his chest. There are numerous groups through out the country that are involved in vandalisms, assaults and even murders. They might also see the family of the child as a way to measure him or her, for example a parent might see a child with a wealthy family as a good potential friend for their own child, but see a child with an underprivileged child as a "bad influence" even though him or her is a benevolent person. Ashamed of his past, he is now in a race to save Danny and the Vinyard family from the violence he's brought down upon them. Sweeny talks to Derek after his rape and he says that if anything his done made his life better shows that his life as a racist has been a waste and has brought nothing but agony to him and his family. Then citing, "white guys against black guys" and the stake was claim to the court, forever. But as Danny turns into the old Derek little does he know that Derek is a changed man. Derek was then convinced to enter the game. For example the groups like the one Derek was in do exist and are involved in vandalisms of many race . The basketball scene, which was one of the flash backs, shows Derek along with Cameron, Stacey, Seth, and Danny sitting and watching the game which the neo-nazis were losing. This might be cause by a passed experienced a parent had with someone of a different race or some statistic they saw on TV to disdain their views on different races. This is an example of an extreme form of racism; this movie shows the problems of racism from the aspects of neo-nazis and how pointless it is.
