Ernest Hemmingway
Many conceive manliness is established by success when introduced to a true test of courage, the extra mile he endures, or the hope he delivers when in dire need or distress. In the novella The Old Man and the Sea, Ernest Hemingway clearly illustrates his perspective of the genuine definition of manliness. Hemingway's views are portrayed in many different circumstances and characters. For example; Santiago, the novella's main character, exhibits masculine characteristics in the sense that he makes the most of every situation. When he is at sea on his skiff and loses much, including blood, he states "Now everything is cleared away...and I have a big reserve of line: all that a man can ask" (52). This shows that in order to be a man, one must always see hope in every predicament, and work with what he has, even though it may seem impossible.
Yet, because of his great endurance, he states, "It is not bad. Another example of a true man making his own decisions is when Manolin, a boy of Santiago's intimate persuasion, defies his father and says he will fish with Santiago. Hemingway uses this example throughout The Old Man and the Sea to make known his views upon male characteristics. " which shows that he no longer follows orders as a child, but determines his future without assistance, like a man. Hemingway's perspective on what defines a man is also shown by a male's ability to live on his own and make his own decisions. Another example would be when Santiago states, after his second day at sea, "Although it is unjust, but I will show him what a man endures. In conclusion, endurance, one's own will, and the willingness to work with what one has as three excellent examples of the definition of manliness through the eyes of an excellent writer who won the Pulitzer Prize for his novella, The Old Man and the Sea, in 1953. In his novella, Ernest Hemingway tests the manliness of his main character by setting him up with difficult situations and painful circumstances.
