The Lunar Landings: Conspiracy or Reality.
On July 20, 1969 the whole world watched as American astronaut Neil Armstrong took the first step onto the surface of the moon. America’s space program, in place since the 1950’s, had won the race to put men on the moon and return the astronauts safely to earth. Or did they? Is it possible that the entire lunar landing did not really happen at all and was kept a secret from not only the United States but from nations all over the world? The controversy over whether the United States went to the moon is becoming popular and conspiracy theorists are convincing people not only in the United States, but also all over the world that Americans never landed on the moon. It was John F. Kennedy’s dream in the early 1960’s to expand the space program to include a successful lunar landing before the end of the decade: I believe that this nation should commit itself. To achieving the goal before this decade is out of landing a man on the moon and returning him safely to earth. No single space project will be more impressive to mankind or more important for the long range exploration of space (“One Giant Leap”). However, many theorists believe that is was impossible to even collect the evidence because of the conditions on the lunar surface. During the daytime the moons surface can heat up to 280 degrees Fahrenheit. Kaysing claims, “This must have been from an errant breeze on the set. Considerations, such as size and weight were thought about before taking anything to the moon. Another assumption that is favored by theorists is that the flag appears to be waving. The lunar module is the device that got the astronauts from the rocket to the moon’s surface. The fact remains as long as there is a space program in America there will always be people who do not believe the Apollo missions took place. If the radiation was so strong and the astronauts did not have the right protection how come they did not get harmed? Williams explains, “The amount of time that the astronauts would have been exposed to radiation from the Van Allen belt was a serious concern at the time the Apollo program was first proposed, but since they were traveling at such great speeds the amount of time spent in the field of radiation was minimal” (Williams Interview). The flag not being fully extended would result in the flag rippling. An unprotected person would most likely get a lethal dose and die, but due to the circumstances the astronauts were in they did not get enough of a dose. Since the United States landed on the moon in 1969, there has been difficulty convincing many people that the moon landings actually occurred. Many things were brought back from the lunar surface such as samples of dust and moon rocks. 71 percent of the students that took the lunar landing survey at Deltona High School also believe it would have been an embarrassment to the United States if another country reached the moon first.
