Colonial Times
Imagine you were living in a society in which individuals were being persecuted and judged solely on their religious beliefs, what type of a culture would this be? Today we are fortunate enough to have essential humanitarian rights, which guarantee us freedom and liberty for all. As well we are respected for our beliefs regarding our religious convictions and aren't judged by them. During the 1600 many people were being singled out because of these beliefs they held. During these times the times were regarded as religious and angry. There was always controversy between different religions. This controversy is what led to the establishment of the English colonies. To better understand the motivations behind the establishment of the colonies we need to further examine English history. King Henry the VIII, as we may recall was the father of Queen Elizabeth, King Henry tossed the Catholic Church out of England long before Jamestown got started. Since King Henry wanted to get married multiple times the Pope didn't approve of it. Thus. King Henry wanted to establish his own church, consequently he founded the Church of England. There were two groups during this time that were especially exasperated at the situa
Some Englishmen wanted the differences between Catholics and Protestants to be greater. King Charles as well as the Puritans were glad to have left England. Puritans came to seek religious toleration but only for themselves. They wanted to build a holy community, where people would live by the rules of the Bible. In 1630, the first Puritan ship, the Arbella, set out for the New World. About 10 years after the arrival of the Separatists the Puritans settled in the New England Coast. Many of the colonists came because they really cared about their religion and wanted to practice peace. When they arrived they drew up a compact named the May Flower Compact, this still remains on of the great documents of American history. Under the Church of England they were unable to practice thus coming to America posed a good alternative one in which they could freely govern themselves as well practice their own religions. There were other groups who wanted to take it even further. The charter was set up to tell the Puritans how to 'run' the colonies. The year the Pilgrims made their journey or Pilgrimage was in 1620, the boat they took towards freedom was called the Mayflower. They tried to follow its every direction> the Puritans got so wrapped up in the Bible they forgot the initial reason why they had come in the first place. When they first sight American land, it was Cape cod.
