The Big Bang in Gregory Benford's Cosm
The Cosm in Gregory Benford's novel of the same name, is a window into a comparable universe. The creation of the Cosm is seemingly parallel to that of the universe it sees. Benford uses this as his platform to go through the Big Bang theory of our universe, focusing on a number of key events. These key events correlate to events in the story that occur in our universe via the Cosm, events like explosions that ruin particle detectors and kill grad students. Let us now chart the evolution of the Cosm these events and focus on how Benford goes about giving his reader information on the Big Bang. The death of Brad was a major event in the story as well as in the Big Bang theory. Bef
Its observers witness various cosmic characters of supernovas, galaxies and dust. As the story concludes the Cosm, which exists on a separate time scale, passes our universe in time and reaches its end. As Max tries to explain his ideas on why the Cosm behaves the way it does he gives tidbits of information on the Big Bang. True to the cyclic character of nature, the universe's gravity over time reaches a point in which it becomes so great it stops expanding and starts imploding. Usually Benford uses Alicia as the semi-inexperienced inquirer and Max as the lecturer. ore this, our scientists had very little data to work with. All mater moves towards one extremely dense point and is compressed back into something resembling the infinitely dense origin of the Big Bang. The information up until this point was various shifting radiation spectra. When he and Alicia are discussing the flash that killed Brad they go back and forth on concepts of hydrogen recombination and what conditions were like in the early universe. Benford gives us this information through our protagonists' theories on the Cosm. Between the hydrogen recombination and the Cosm's end, it becomes transparent (due to effects on the material of the window its self). Benford chooses the Big Crunch theory as his end, a sort of reverse Big Bang. The flash of photons that burst from the Cosm, killing Brad, was the result of the creation hydrogen. Another one of the main events of the story (also involving explosions) is the end of the Cosm.
