Revenge in Hamlet
In William Shakespeare's Hamlet revenge plays a large role in the development of Fortinbras, Laertes, and Hamlet. These three men are all looking to avenge their father's deaths. Although each of them vow to seek revenge, their individual methods and ideologies differ. Their decisions, and ultimately their fate, are also influenced by the ideas of others. With an underlining emphasis on honor Fortinbras, Laertes and Hamlet all strive towards one common goal. The central action of the play revolves around the three main families. The family of King Fortinbras, the family of Polonius, and the family of King Hamlet. With the death of the father in each family the task of revenge is placed upon their sons. It becomes their duty to restore honor to their individual families and murder, in the time which the play is set, is a respectable means of doing so. Their response to this responsibility and their individual motivation to act differs among them. King Fortinbras of Norway was killed by King Hamlet of Denmark, and it is for this sole reason that Prince Fortinbras became so enraged. "A thought which, quartered, hath but one part wisdom/ and ever three parts coward. He sent word to Fortinbras' uncle, the current King, requesting that he put a halt to one such attack. His trouble to fulfill his father's demand exists because Hamlet is not decisive, nor is he impulsive. Dying, Hamlet learns that his mother is dead by poison intended for him and forces Claudius to follow suit. However, he is successful in accomplishing his task, and thus if only for a brief moment, honor is restored to him. Laertes would not have died had Claudius not chosen to agree with him, for there would have been no use of poison on the sword. He also simply refuses to listen to reason. Hamlet is, however, the least likely to act without weighing all possible outcomes.
