House On Mango Street:Hidden Message, Feminism
Sandra Cisneros was born December 20 1954 in Chicago, IL. She is the daughter of a Mexican father and a Chicana mother. Cisneros "has worked as a teacher to high school dropouts, a poet-in-the-schools, a college recruiter, and an arts administrator". She is a novelist, short-story writer, essayist, and poet. She has won many awards over the years. Cisneros is also the author of Women Hollering Creek and Other Stories, My Wicked Wicked Ways, and Loose Woman. Sandra Cisneros in the story The House On Mango Street, uses figurative language to hide her hidden feminist ideas that women should have equal rights with men. Cisneros contributes to the story her own life as a Hispanic women being oppressed and trying to succeed in woman domination. Sandra Cisneros' life is displayed through much of the women obstacles given in the book The House On Mango Street. She grew up with six brothers which may have contribute to the idea that she is oppressed. Cisneros, also, comes from a Mexican heritage. Women from other cultures do not have as many independent decisions as other women in other cultures. They live day-by-day on what their husbands demand of them. Just like that as if she were a fancy chandelier"(Cisneros, Sandra 11). Hope is an ironic name for a character whose dreams of being an independent and liberal spirit woman were never accomplished. She feels that the women are not the only people that should take part in giving life to the children. The reality is that these woman are just material objects to Earl. Women should not keep the traditional roles but introduce an independent, powerful woman into the oppress cultures. Cisneros dedicates Mango Street "to the women" and presents a collections of feminine portraits which reveal directly the neighborhood subculture and, indirectly, various, aspects of her identity"(Szadziuk,Marie). And he doesn't like her friends, so nobody gets to visit her unless he is working. Lucy excites everyone to take off their socks and right then there, the girls discover that they have legs. Sally, one of Esperanza's good friends is desperate to get married with anyone just to escape the brutal hands of her father. She wants her audience to notice this physical abuse and take it into consideration. You gotta know how to walk with hips, practice you know--like if half of you wanted to go one way and the other half the other"(Cisneros, Sandra 50). The men feel that they show love and power over women by hitting their wives or daughters. A place where women spend most of their time in Mango Street is their house. Cisneros has currently returned to her community, just like Espernaza promise to return to Mango Street, "showing powerful connection between art, politics, and everyday life".
