Most authors tend to write about their own personal experiences and things that they know about first hand. As one of America's first and foremost realists and humorists (Carey, book) Samuel Longhorne Clemens, a.k.a. Mark Twain, did exactly that. In his book, Huckleberry Finn, he incorporates into his book, his family life, his surroundings as a child, and his experiences on the Mississippi.
             Samuel Longhorne Clemens was born to John and Jane Clemens on November 30, 1835, in the tiny town of Florida, Missouri (Camp, Internet). Twain's mother, a southern belle in her youth, had a natural sense of humor, was emotional, and was known to be particularly fond of animals, and unfortunate human beings (Carey, book). Twain's father was a lawyer by profession, but was only mildly successful. John Clemens, Twain's father died when Twain was just 12 years old. In Huckleberry Finn, Huck's dad died when he was about 12 (Twain, book). Also Huck has a strange concern for unfortunate human beings, like the 2 cutthroats whose lives he tried to save when their ferryboat was sinking. In all, Mark Twain based his book, Huckleberry Finn, on his family life as a child.
             Another subject that Mark Twain used in Huckleberry Finn, were his surroundings as a child. Mark Twain spent most of his childhood in the rural town of Hannibal, Missouri on the coast of the "Mighty Mississippi". In Huckleberry Finn, Huck grows up in a town on the Mississippi. Also, when Huck was kidnapped by his father, he is hidden in a great forest. Twain's hometown was surrounded by a forest, in which he used to play as a child. Another experience Twain used in his book, Huckleberry Finn, were his childhood surroundings.
