Roman Constitution
Plutarch writes about the future leader of Rome, Caesar. Plutarch tells us about how brave and great Caesar was. Plutarch also tells us the story of how Caesar got away from his kidnappers just to go back to them later to kill them. Caesar how ever was a great leader in war. He did not put himself higher than his men. Caesar would not have his men do something that he wouldn't do himself. Plutarch also tells us the amount of people he killed and took prisoner of. And to show that Caesar was also a prick at times. The way Plutarch wrote about Caesar you would never have guessed that is was years after Caesar's death that this was written.Reading Polybius's "Roman Constitution" it is very similar to our Constitution of The United States. We have the Legislative, Executive, and the judicial branches of Government. Polybius's describes the Roman government was made up of the Consuls, Senate, and the People, different words same meaning. In order for our country to run as honest as it does we use a systems the Romans used called, Checks and Balances. In today government they look at the people in to classes, the upper class and the lower class, as did the Romans and a lot of other countries government's.
Yet at times these two forces within Cicero clash and contradict with the early stoic teachings. Tacitus "Histories" are a gripping set of stories about the years A. It was a while before things settled down again, under the iron fist of the keen Emperor Vespasian. Emperor Justinian I wanted to have a code of laws that were uniform. Tacitus had the advantage of some perspective; he wrote some time after the events in question, and had access to state Roman records as well as the memories of some of the people involved. That is what happens when everyone is let out of the cave all at once not knowing what he or she are doing. But stoicism was still a Greek philosophy, something the roman heart could never truly digest very well. In this time, Nero committed suicide; there were 4 separate emperors, some pretty ugly civil wars, riots and assassinations. Aurelius was not an original or brilliant thinker, but his Meditations reflect well the stoic strain in Greco-Roman civilization. Another stoic lifestyle someone had was Marcus Aurelius. As a public figure Cornelius Tacitus got all his information from respective sources like official documents and the things he experience in his life. It is like a classic adventure story that is filled with human tragedy, triumph, corrupt politics, betrayals, great plans and schemes along with more, but this was true-life stuff. This view also came from a very famous philosopher; Aristotle (384bc-322bc), this fact, backs up Augustine's case.
