MTV Logo

Have you ever been watching your favorite music video when suddenly a little MTV logo pops into to the corner of the screen? If so you have been a witness to one of the most influential devices of “pop” culture. MTV has influenced and supported pop culture by providing new trends in music, dress, and many other facets of pop culture. The smallest pieces of advertising can often be the most influential. As you can see, MTV intends to interrupt any programming just to catch the viewer’s eyes and put a label what is going on. This advertising concept is not new, and chances are, parents of today’s teenagers were distracted by the same MTV logo while watching music videos between March of 1981 and now. In many cases, when something works it is kept, and that is exactly what MTV did with their logo.

The MTV logo is a symbol of the American way of life in the form of music, style, and important decisions. People have looked to MTV to provide them with new ideas for many years. These ideas have been anything from style, such as the recent mesh hat trend; to music, where would punk rock be without MTV? Just to think, MTV has been a way of life since the 80’s. When watching MTV it is hard to not recognize style; it

. . .
Why does this symbol mark people’s minds, and why does the MTV image make an instant connection in the minds of many? It shouldn’t be too hard to explain. The logo varies in size, and is made up of a large box-letter, capital “M” complete with lower-case “tv”, in handwriting style font, laid over the lower right quarter of the capital M. This shows that the MTV logo is a symbol of American Life. The combination of red and yellow on the MTV logo is effective because the color combination is “hip” and it catches the viewer’s eye. According to John Sykes, one of MTV’s founders, MTV was intended to be, “a mood, not a show”. is everywhere! Any program that airs on MTV is cast with youthful people that set trends while portraying the “typical” teenager and/or college student. From what a viewer sees in the form of fashion trends, they can adjust their wardrobe to look like the “cool guy or pretty girl”. Black is associated with power, elegance, death, evil, and mystery. MTV likes to stress the “M” because that is their reason for broadcasting, “the music of life”. Presidential Elections and news about rock bands has become more of an interest of the teenager/college student, so the programming/logo has not required a modification. For example, one year ago mesh hats were for old men on poker night and now every high school or college student has one. This is exactly what the logo’s designers took into consideration when designing the first logo, because they wanted viewers to have a passion for the programming, Another quality of red is the ability to bring text and images to the foreground. This fashion statement was made by the host of a particularly popular show titled Punk’d, and America’s youth duplicated what they saw without ever worrying that they might look like their grandpa. The fact that MUSIC TELEVISION is so basic shows that MTV confides in their viewers to interpret the logo design without problem.

The logo itself has many links to pop culture.
