Television and News
1) The influence on TV on political process is unmistakable. In America the number of people who get their news through television rises steeply. In 1960 it was found out, that people who watched Kennedy on the TV had made a good impression of him and the ones who listened to the presidential campaign debates of Nixon on the radio had inclined toward Nixon. The Roper Organisation discovered in 1984, that 51% got their news trough television, 31% through newspapers and 18% through other sources. 2) TV news conveys 'a feeling of immediacy with a sense of being "on the spot" and involved in the action.'(l 12) and you could say that it connects 'timeliness with visual excitement'(l 11). Because of that it can create a sense of confidence. Another advantage of TV is that everybody is informed at the same time. For example 90% of the nation was informed within an hour of John F. Kennedy's assassination. It's maybe also positive that you only get the facts even if it is a very compressed story. It is handy that you get informed very quickly.3) The two statements "The big problem is that TV news producers like pictures" (Neil Hickey) (l.22) and "The range of visual images...is surprisingly narrow."(Kidder) (l. 23) are, as I see it, a
In the end, I think it doesn't matter where you get your news. These things could give kids the wrong ideas, for instance that killing is a normal thing in our world. Because if TV news producers like pictures so much, why are there not many?4) The meaning of "headline service" so that "context is lost" (l. This nice 'side-effect' can be a TV-guide, some vouchers, a horoscope, a poster or something else. But with a radio you still get informed about what's going on in the world right now and you also hear about the traffic. However newspapers are very handy, because there is a huge offer of different newspapers and it doesn't matter if you are in the train or in a cafe or on a plane or at home, you can read newspapers nearly everywhere. It's also not good, that you only get the facts without details and that you have to hear the whole stuff also the things you don't like. Thus when you want to know a lot about something particular you maybe should better read a newspaper! I think, the best way to escape of manipulation and to acquire a certain knowledge is to get your news from all the 3 media. But the radio is still a clever thing, because when you are driving your car, you aren't able to watch TV or to read the newspaper. This aspect is not true for newspapers, because in Austria they get printed in the evening. And maybe because the details disappear, it's difficult for some people to understand the context from one headline to the other. It's also an advantage that they have pictures and that you can choose what you like to read and what not. A disadvantage of the radio is that there are no pictures at all and that the radio also tells you only about the facts.
