United Nations

             In January of 1945,26 nations came together during will to pledge their governments to continue fighting against the axis power. These 26 nations were called the "Untied Nations", a term coined by President Franklin D. Roosevelt. The forerunner of the Untied nations was called the League of Nations. The League of Nations was established in 1919 to promote international cooperation and to achieve peace and security. The League of Nations and the untied nations were enacted to create a group of nations acting as one. In 1945, members of 50 countries met in San Francisco to draw up the United Nations charter. This charter was signed by the 50 representatives on June 26,1945 but the untied nations wasn't officially in existence until October 24,1945 when it was ratified by China, France, Soviet Union and the U.K. and the U.S.
             To this day the U.N. is still around. It is now a group of 189 members. Their mission today still being to promote peace and security in the world. A few other missions the U.N. has embarked on promoting democracy, promoting human rights, protecting the environment, strengthen international was, providing aide to nations that need it. Those are just some of their missions.
             This organization has a huge impact on the world community. The U.N. has been credited with negotiating many peaceful settlements that's have ended conflicts. Recent conflicts like the Iran-Iraq war, the withdrawal of soviet troops from Afghanistan and many other things like bringing food and other needs and supplies to Somalia.
             The United Nations should be efficient in the future. Right now they are dealing with a crisis. As long as there is fear in the world and nations that are in a crisis, the U.N. will be around. Right now the U.N. is trying to resolve a situation with Sadam Hussein.
