A Scandal in Bohemia
"A Scandal in Bohemia" is about Sherlock Holmes and his incapacity to love a woman-Irene Adler. The author, Arthur Conan Doyle, shows that if there were any woman that could unbalance Holmes unbalance from the "perfect reasoning machine" (421) and act on his feelings it would be her. The ideal woman for Holmes is Irene Adler because of she is beautiful, smart, and extremely clever. First, Holmes does not notice Irene Adler's beauty. Other men including the king are drawn to her beauty; however, Holmes is not like other men. He has a top priority to investigate and close cases. Holmes speaks how other men feel about Irene Adler. He states, "Oh, she has turned all men's heads. She is the dainties thing under a bonnet on this planet" (430) to show Irene's extre
She figured out that Holmes had tricked her into getting into her home. In conclusion, I feel that although Holmes lacks love and emotions that Irene certainly left a strong enough impact on the man. The narrator states, "When he speaks of Irene Adler, or when he refers to her photograph , it is always under the honourable title of the women" (439). However Irene does have other qualities in which Holmes should be in love with. The doctor thinks, "I never felt more heartily ashamed of myself in my life than when I saw the beautiful creature against whom I was conspiring, or the grace and kindliness with which she waited on the injured man. Later, Holmes and his partner the doctor are out to deceive Irene in order to close the case of the missing photo. Thus, other men can be persuaded and influenced by Irene Adler's beauty, but not Holmes. If Holmes were capable of loving a woman it would have been Irene; therefore, Holmes is incapable of loving any woman. And yet it would be the blackest treachery to Holmes to draw back now from the part which he had intrusted to me" (436). Irene Adler was the woman because there are none like her in the way of beauty, brains, smarts, and cleverness at fooling the cleverest-Holmes. Holmes asks that Irene's photograph be his payment from the King. Holmes states, "Your majesty has something which I should value even more highly," "This photograph" (439). Irene Adler is crafty, clever and knows how to out smart others, even Holmes, which should make her extremely desirable to Holmes.
