The story "Marriage is a Private Affair" and the poem "This Be the Verse" made
me analyze that parents decisions aren't always the best ones. I think when a parent
decision do not agree with the lives of their children, it can cause conflict between them.
I felt the story by Chinua Achebe and the poem by Philip Lankin gave me a great
appreciation on the impact parents have on their children lives. We all have experienced
our parent decision that we did not agree with. These two literatures have given me the
opportunity to realize parents are not always right.
This story "Marriage is a Private Affair" is dealing with a fathers decision
That his son did not agree with. In Okeke letter to his son Nnaemeka he told him, "I
found a girl who will suit you admirable" (239). I found it displeasing that his father
showed no concern that he did not love Ugoye. Nnaemkiah had already found a girl he
loved and was going to marry. When he told his father, I felt he did not express his
wants and feeling strongly towards his father. After that day, Okeke didn't have anything
else to do with his son. I can imagine how Nnaemkiah felt. He must have been hurt and
tormented from his father cutting him out of his life.
I believe that parent decisions for their children are not always best for them. Parents do make mistakes. The father did realized years later when Nena his daughter-in-law wrote to him concerning his two grandsons that he made a mistake. However, he tried to fight the admittance of his mistake. Love and concern for his grandchildren won. This story says a lot about parent decisions can sometimes be mistakes. It is never too late to admit your mistakes.
The poem "This Be the Verse" also deals with parents decisions for their children. I did not see a strong connection with parent decisions. Then the first two
