A Parent Decision
The story "Marriage is a Private Affair" and the poem "This Be the Verse" mademe analyze that parents decisions aren't always the best ones. I think when a parentdecision do not agree with the lives of their children, it can cause conflict between them.I felt the story by Chinua Achebe and the poem by Philip Lankin gave me a greatappreciation on the impact parents have on their children lives. We all have experiencedour parent decision that we did not agree with. These two literatures have given me theopportunity to realize parents are not always right. This story "Marriage is a Private Affair" is dealing with a fathers decisionThat his son did not agree with. In Okeke letter to his son Nnaemeka he told him, "I found a girl who will suit you admirable" (239). I found it displeasing that his fathershowed no concern that he did not love Ugoye. Nnaemkiah had already found a girl heloved and was going to marry. When he told his father, I felt
The idea I got from the poem is that parents make decisions, kids follow them and it messes up their lives. Love and concern for his grandchildren won. he did not express hiswants and feeling strongly towards his father. The father did realized years later when Nena his daughter-in-law wrote to him concerning his two grandsons that he made a mistake. New York: Longman, 2001, 238-242Philip Lankin "This Be the Verse". The one thing I do disagree with the Narrator is when he said, "And don't have any kids yourself" (12). It is never too late to admit your mistakes. After that day, Okeke didn't have anythingelse to do with his son. I believe that parent decisions for their children are not always best for them. His decision were based on ancestors who passed down their beliefs. My views of the story "Marriage is a Private Affair" and the poem "This Be the Verse" makes me view parents decision as someone else decisions and not your own. I know the decision is out of love and what they were taught.
