The Scarlet Letter
In the novel, "The Scarlet Letter", by Nathaniel Hawthorne, some of the characters change in different ways. There are three characters in the novel that I think change the most, and they are Hester Prynne, Arthur Dimmesdale, and Roger Chillingworth. All three characters change into different people and they may become better or worse people. At the beginning of the novel, you can tell that Hester is beginning to change. She starts to become stronger and her attitude changes. Hester's attitude becomes much more rebellious. Hester had to wear an "A" on her chest that represented the sins she committed of adultery. She became stronger and made the "A" more elegant for other people to see, but others did not think it should look nice. Others believed that the letter on her chest should look ugly and worn out to make Hester look like scum. As the novel goes on, Hester becomes even stronger and feels better about herself. Hester shows this by the way she acts and how she is helping others like the poor and the sick people a
As the novel continues Dimmesdale becomes even weaker because of his guilt. Dimmesdale left this sin in him for seven years and never had the power to confess to the people. Arthur Dimmesdale also goes through some drastic changes from the sins that he committed and the guilt that built up inside him. Roger spent a lot of time with Arthur, and soon finds out his Hester and Dimmesdale's secret. Roger Chillingworth tried to be a good guy, but he was very devious which led to his tempt for revenge. Chillingworth changed from being a good person to becoming a bad one with the revenge he would not let go of until he died. Roger wants revenge because he felt like he was taken for granite. Hester became more of a person and ended up feeling better about herself and had the courage to be in front of people no matter what they thought of her. Roger Chillingworth goes through some major changes in the novel that may come to a surprise to people. Dimmesdale felt very bad for his actions and not always being there for Pearl, but he finally was able to confess. He confesses to the public on the scaffold that Pearl is his daughter, then he dies right there. In the beginning of the novel, Dimmesdale is very weak because of his ways of not going to confess his sins that Hester begs him to. Hester, Chillingworth, and Dimmmesdale all change their character a lot throughout this novel. Hester became a better person and much more independent as the novel went on.
