Condoms in High School

Officials that distribute condoms on school campuses have often been accused of immorality. As stated in the article, Condoms in Schools, "courts have tended to defer to school boards decisions and allow condom distribution programs to stand, but legislators have tended to restrict school boards' powers and prohibit such programs from being instituted" (Lisko, 10/7/01). Certainly, abstinence up to a certain stage in a person's life is prudent, but it cannot determine what is the proper age to become sexually active. The issue of condom distribution, while controversial, affects not only our youth but also society as a whole. It is clear, however, that condom distribution benefits a great number of people. Although it may seem immoral to some, condom distribution can and will save lives in the long run. "Conflicts about sex education and reproductive services are creating cultural divide among communities that have school-based health clinics" (Keen, 10/05/01). What happens when a student has little or no parental guidance? Also, what is a student with little or no access to a physician going to do if he or she needs a condom or information on how to use one? When students have little or no access to a nurse or a physician, students will not get the medical and scientific information that they need. The fact that society cherishes church, family, and social values cannot diminish the importance of the education of our youth. There are pressures on young people to engage in sex before marriage, to procure abortions, and to live together without being married. These pressures come mostly from the media, popular literature, movies and peers. Condom distribution in schools increase the chance that our children will use at least some type of birth control and the most effective prevention of sexual transmitted disease. Condom distribution in schools, provide a type of education that may not coincide with church and family values, but it is very necessary, nonetheless. Schools can provide a student with the knowledge they require. ng to Chronic Disease Prevention, "The United States has the highest teenage pregnancy rate of all developed countries" (10/03/01). Condoms may reduce the risk, however; they do not eliminate the risk. It is very sad to see a family that is unable to communicate. They are the proper source for medical information and counseling. They can learn about the seriousness of sexual diseases as well as the danger of pregnancy. Many people believe that parents and doctors should be the people responsible for educating kids about condoms. The distribution of condoms in schools is one more way for parents to avoid having to dispense condoms themselves.
