Condoms in High School

Officials that distribute condoms on school campuses have often been accused of immorality. As stated in the article, Condoms in Schools, "courts have tended to defer to school boards decisions and allow condom distribution programs to stand, but legislators have tended to restrict school boards' powers and prohibit such programs from being instituted" (Lisko, 10/7/01). Certainly, abstinence up to a certain stage in a person's life is prudent, but it cannot determine what is the proper age to become sexually active. The issue of condom distribution, while controversial, affects not only our youth but also society as a whole. It is clear, however, that condom distribution benefits a great number of people. Although it may seem immoral to some, condom distribution can and will save lives in the long run.
"Conflicts about sex education and reproductive services are creating cultural divide among communities that have school-based health clinics" (Keen, 10/05/01). Cathy Keen, in her article, Controversy Engulfs Reproductive Services At School Clinics, states "the number of school-based health clinics has risen dramatically from a few dozen in time mid-1980s to more than 1,200 today" (10/05/01). According to Chronic Disease Prevention, "The United States has the highest teenage pregnancy rate of all developed countries" (10/03/01). Teenagers in our society today are sexually active at a very young age. The distribution of condoms in schools is one more way for parents to avoid having to dispense condoms themselves. Some parents do not feel comfortable talking about sex, diseases, or birth control with their children. Some parents, who may feel uncomfortable
discussing sex with their teenagers, may find that distribution of condoms in schools might be an adequate source for their children to get information and guidance.
