Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

Carpal tunnel syndrome is a problem that affects many American every year. Some get it from work related injuries and some from everyday events a person partakes in. The causes, symptoms and the cures of carpal tunnel syndrome will be examined. CTS can be hard for many people to understand and to deal with on a daily basis. Now people can get rid of CTS with anywhere from over-the-counter drugs, to full out surgery. Carpal tunnel syndrome can be debilitating but with technology it is possible to live happily.

Carpal tunnel syndrome is a common problem that affects the hand and wrist. This condition, or syndrome, has become the focus of much attention in the last few years due to suggestions that it may be linked to occupations that require repetitive use of the hands, such as typing (3). In reality, there are many people who develop this condition, regardless of the type of work that they do. Denna Rosolen states “the carpal tunnel is a passageway in the wrist formed by the eight carpal (wrist) bones, which make up the floor and sides of the tunnel, and the transverse carpal ligament, a strong ligament stretching across the roof of the tunnel. Inside the carpal tunnel are nine flexor tendons, which be

. . .
When the wrist is in this position, the carpal tunnel is as big as it can be so the nerve has as much room as possible (2). There is also a newer way to get cortisone medications down into the carpal tunnel. This medication will decrease the swelling of the tendon and may give temporary relief of symptoms (1). Workplace situations can be a contributing factor in carpal tunnel syndrome and good practice is a must for people in this type of repetitive work. Even exercise may prevent or control the symptoms of carpal tunnel syndrome. Proper work pacing, regular rest breaks, reducing repetition and force, and the use of ergonomically designed tools and equipment can minimize the risk. Carpal tunnel syndrome is sometimes referred to as a cumulative trauma disorder or repetitive strain injury. Thickening of the tendons can restrict the shape within the tunnel and cause the nerve to become pressed

against the ligament forming the roof of the tunnel. The median nerve lies directly beneath the transverse carpal ligament and comes in contact with the ligament when bending or straightening the wrist or fingers”(4). There are several different surgical procedures designed to relieve pressure on the median nerve. The brace needs to be worn at night while sleeping to prevent the numbness and pain occurring at night. This is thought to be caused by inflammation and swelling of the tendons due to overuse. If symptoms occur during the day as well, the brace may help reduce those symptoms too. There are both sergical and non-sergical alternatives to carpal tunnel syndrom depending upon how bad the persons symptoms are.
