Overconformity in Sports
Overconformity in sports is something that happens everyday. It happens everywhere professionally and on youth soccer fields as well. There are several forms of overconformity that I will discuss. One type that I will discuss is playing injured even though you should not. The other type I will talk about is taking performance-enhancing drugs. First I'm going too discuss drugs in professional sports. More and more athletes are getting suspended from the league or fined because of using performance-enhancing drugs. One incident that just happened was Carolina Panthers defensive end Julius Peppers failed a urine test and has been suspended from the NFL. He was suspended for using a banned dietary supplement. It used to be steroids that were the main performance enhancing drug that got athletes suspended. But now professional leagues are banning dietary supplements because of the danger that they put high performance athletes in. There are cases in which the athlete sometimes is taking medicine too feel better and gets in trouble because of what's in the medicine. Another incident was at the 2000 summer Olympic games. Andreea Raducan had won a gold medal at the games but a couple of days later it was taken away from her b
If you get hurt it's unacceptable to come out of the game unless you're carried out on a stretcher. So you can make a case that him staying in the game actually hurt his team. After all of the article and observations I came too the conclusion that the underlying belief about overconformity is true. The other overconformity is playing in a game even though you are injured and probably shouldn't play. This is just one of many examples where athletes stay in the game because of pride or because when they were younger coach always told them to play or to stay in the game because the pain would go away. There were many incidents that a player was injured. He couldn't even grip the ball but because of the theory that athletes have to play hurt, he stayed in the game. But McNabb went to the coach and told him that he wanted to stay in. This is a theory that is embedded in athletes from the beginning of their playing days. After the game he found out that he broke his ankle and would not be able to play for the remainder of the regular season. One of my players went down and I asked him if he was ok and then I told him to get up, shake it off and stay in the game. He would come off get taped up and then go back into the game. For data collection method I used observation. Another observation I had was in my own youth soccer game. Athletes feel the pressure to continue playing when they get hurt.
