College Football
This past Saturday the Bulldogs of Wingate University took on the Indians of Newberry College with the hopes of Wingate breaking the .500 mark. Right from the first quarter on the Bulldogs controlled the game with a sound offense and a relentless defense, with the Bulldogs winning 33-0. At first, the Indians came out looking strong with a 28 yard kick off return giving them excellent field position. The Wingate defense held tough and didn't allow Newberry a first down forcing them to punt. From there on it was over for Newberry as the Wingate offense came out and drove impressively down the field with a balanced offense. Junior wide receiver Rodney Williams finished of the 86 yard drive with a 14 yard juggling catch in the end zone. On the following Newberry possession the Bulldog defense came up big again. This time with a fumble recovery by junior defensive linemen John Bowman returning it 44 yards for a touchdown, putting the score at 14-0 nine minutes in
The Wingate defense held strong for the rest of the game keeping their shutout intact and finishing the day with a 33-0 score. "Brant is developing more and more, he's getting a better feel for the game and playing like a veteran" said Coach Reich. After halftime both defenses came alive in the third quarter by not allowing many yards or first downs by both teams. After the game Head Coach Joe Reich commented on how well his team played by saying "I think we played a solid game, it doesn't take a superhuman effort just consistency to win a game", which coach thought was a good lesson his team learned on Saturday. The Newberry offense suddenly came alive late in the third quarter with a huge 36 yard pass play, which put Newberry in superb field position. The drive was later finished off by a one yard touchdown run by Hair, putting the Bulldogs up 30-0 in the fourth. The Bulldogs didn't slow down here, after a poor punt by the Indians punter the Bulldog offense marched down the field as the first quarter expired. Wingate struck early in the fourth when sophomore quarterback Stuart Card connected with Williams for a pass-catch that covered 42 yards. The Bulldogs utilized this turnover when Straup kicked an 18 yard field goal. The Indians were unable to utilize this field position and the Bulldog defense kept the shutout in tact when the Indians place kicker missed a 31 yard field goal attempt. Sophomore kicker Chris Brewer capped off the turnover with a booming 45 yard field goal, which was against the wind. Some of the key players from Saturday's game was Rashad Hair who ran the ball 12 times for 84 yards and a touchdown, also Coach Reich felt that freshman defensive lineman Brant Daye had a big afternoon. Coach went onto to say that "when we play well up front, on both sides of the ball, everything just falls into place".
