The Romans founded a republic on the Italian Peninsula. Italy's geography and Rome's location had to do a lot with the rise of Roman power. The Roman's used a form of government called a republic. The Assembly of Tribes elected the 10 tribunes (officials). They could propose a citizen to be a dictator. , the Romans wrote down their first laws on tablets know as the Twelve Tables. Romulus was so mad that he killed his brother and swore to do the same to "whoever else shall leap over walls. A dictator could only be in power for six months. The two social classes were divided between the patricians (aristocrats) and the plebeians.
