Leadership
Where does a leader learn to lead? He must first be taught by a true leader. A leader is the one who sets the example for others to follow. If the leader is not a true leader, his followers will never become true leaders either. They will continue to lead others the wrong way and so on down the line as time goes on. I will begin with my freshman year. That year I had true leaders who were seniors to look up to and mentor me. They taught me the saying, “What can I do for the unit, not what can the unit do for me.” That is the last year I feel we had a true unit . I learned to respect my superiors, to always do what I was told and to never question it or there would be consequences. You would never say to one of them, “You are not my boss, you can’t tell me what to do.” I was taught to take care of myself as well as my subordinates. You never go crying to someone that you weren’t being treated fairly, you took what was given to you because you followed your leader. A leader is someone you look up to, not run complaining to all the time that things weren’t going the way you wanted them to. They did not demand your respect, they earned it. As I was taught before by Sgt. Major, you are not given respect . . .
Why haven’t I been promoted to an officer? You say this is like the military. I think it is because he knows I am dependable and care about the welfare of this unit. He was given that position because he knows how to kiss ass right. I was getting up extra early every day to pick up people who needed rides so that they could be part of the unit. That is why I yell at them because I have shown them what to do and they are not doing it. I want to know why besides the fact that he knows I am dependable is he calling me when I am not the CO, to get people to help out or to have me come in and help out. I think it is wrong that I get demoted for being mean to my subordinates when I am not being mean to them I am teaching them in the manner I was taught and in the manner that you teach. I never saw it and I didn’t say one word about it. I am sorry for my language as it was wrong to be using against an instructor. I want to know why as a senior am I still a staff sargent. He listens to the seniors because he learned to respect us since our Sophomore year. There are people who are leaders and those that are followers. Top called me several times during the summer, before you came, to help him get the unit ready for the new school year. And that until you can earn someone’s respect, you can never be a true leader.
