Ethical dilemmas in University

Every University has them; it is just that some hide them better than others. I am talking about ethical dilemmas. What is meant by the term ethical? Ethics is considered to be the code of moral principles and values that govern the behaviors of a person (organization) with respect to what is right or wrong. In other words an ethically accepted decision is both legally and morally acceptable to the larger community. Some of the questions that will be raised in this paper are the following: Who draws the line on what is ethical and what is unethical? Who takes the responsibilities of these actions when fault is involved? And should universities be allowed to hide these unspeakable incidents from the public?

Morales, everyone has them but they are different according to each individual. What might be right for me can be wrong for you and vice-versa. Morales are not inherited at birth, yet they are learned throughout the course of an individual’s lifetime. It can be looked at as a game of trial and error. One must understand of course that what is legal according to the government is not alway

. . .
This all could have been avoided if the University took the Utilitarian Approach. This approach states that moral behaviors produce the greatest good for the greatest number. External, meaning outside the control of the organization consists of many factors. In the year 2000 she committed suicide, but nobody knows exactly for what reason, according to the University. In this article they tell a story of a girl named Elizabeth Shin.

Deciding what to do is never easy? You will always be faced with the question is it ethical or unethical? One must ask the question, whom is this action going to benefit? Who is this action going to potentially harm? Would you allow everyone to do what you are deciding to do? There are no correct answers to these questions. Internal factors affect the University as well as external factors do. Elizabeth was a student who attended the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and she was nineteen years of age. Others will say that it is a bad or rather unstable ethical outlook. An example of an internal factor on the environment could be the University President trying to cover up many incidents on campus in order to maintain the prestige of the institution.

As far as I can see it Universities have two environments: an external environment and an internal environment. In my opinion the ethical thing to do would have been for the University to notify Elizabeth’s parents about her situation. Government, the public, legal groups, and other groups pertaining to (underage drinking, etc. ) are just a few of the external factors that affect the environment.
