Social Darwinsim and a Three Legged Stool
Social Darwinism & A Three Legged Stool In my room, there lives a spider that I watched crawl in from the cracks of the wall and, within a mere day, it constructed the most beautiful web where once there had only been a barred window. I marveled at the spider's perseverance and its determination to make something miraculous out of almost nothing. The spider had built its own home by relying on its own resources that lay within its reach. The spider had come into the room with nothing, but chose to build a web in a location where it felt it would have the greatest amount of success at catching its food. In effect, the spider had put all of its eggs into one basket, relying on that one web to procure what it desired. As I pondered over that thought, the name "Andrew Carnegie" came to mind, for did he not say "Put all your eggs in one basket - and watch that basket!"? (Baker 45) This web was an investment; however, I immediately scoffed at the idea that every creature could secure his own fortune by starting off poor, applying the values of hard work, determination, and a little luck. This was Carnegie's formula for success. With these values firmly in place, an individual could possibly rise above their poverty and ob
He reassured us that there was "no first, second, or last. By 1892, my overall condition had begun to plummet. He also added "Thou shalt not take thy neighbor's job. Besides, it was common knowledge that he hated unions and he absolutely hated dealing with them. Apparently he had been burned to death from the molten lead. As I read through the pages, the author spoke of a boy named Ragged Dick who, like me, had been born poor and was an orphan. That day, as I walked through town pondering how I was going to make my fortune, I bumped into a small Scottish man to whom I immediately apologized for my clumsiness. I usually am subjected to large amounts of strong sedatives to lessen the intensity of my delusions and my visual disturbances - although I assure them I am quite well. He said, "There is a partnership of three in the industrial world when an enterprise is planned. My ability to relate to many of the character's adversities filled me with a desire to read more. There is no precedence!" (Baker 50) I think he was making references to how perhaps he believed that labor overstepped its bounds and, as a result, the enterprise had suffered a loss. Having no title given to me, I decided to give myself the title of "Broom Man" since I felt having job title would make me a less expendable asset to the company. I wanted to believe that the government had a genuine concern for the support of labor unions but the government intervention in the Haymarket Riot clearly was in support of the business owners. And what time did I have after working at the mills 12 hours each day? There was only time to eat and sleep.
