Saving Private Ryan

The movie Saving Private Ryan is not your typical World War II movie. It is about the triumph of the United States over Germany but rather the focus on how horrific the effects of war are on those participating, not only physically but also mentally. What I liked about this film is the fact that it is not the plot that brings the emotions of the audience but the scenes of war and the interactions and dialogue of the soldiers involved. From this movie we get as close to a first hand portrayal of what took place for those whom participated in World War II. We also get a aspect of war that has never been portrayed on film before. We know that lives are lost during war and we hear how some of these deaths occur but we rarely see such a vivid display of some of the horrifying ways of how casualties and human loss are taken.

The movie takes place during the Second World War. Our first vivid images of the movie take place during the D-Day invasion of Normandy by U.S. troops on Omaha beach. The images of war on the beach are horrific as soldier after soldier is mowed down at the hands of German artillery. Soon after the opening war sequence we are transported to the home front where we learn of the dea

. . .
Watching a he screams with pain, not only because of the wound but because he is scared of dying. The act of killing another human being is not as difficult anymore to these men because the loss of life that has been part of their surrounding for a sustained period of time has overwhelmed these men because they have participated in this loss of life. The images of men being shot, the explosions, men trying to escape fire only to die in the ocean under the weight of their packs and equipment, and the sight of men with limbs blown off searching for their missing body parts. The first of these examples in the movie is when the group’s medic is wounded to the extent that everyone knows he will die soon. But through the ordeals the men end up obeying the orders, and fighting and even dying for a man they neither knows nor really wants to help. A scene with such a tremendous sense of reality is hard to forget even when the scene is over. The interaction of the soldiers is not always in goodwill. The act of a friend dying is one thing but it is another to know that there is absolutely nothing one can do to help him survive his wound is that much worse. It showed how men react in the face of battle and what goes through their minds as they are witnessing the destruction of life all around them.

The first of these arguments is best seen in the opening twenty-five minutes of the movie. Is this because that one man sees death as the ultimate payback to the enemy and the other that death is used as a threat of disobedience? It’s hard to tell but the use of violence that has been endured in battle may be an explanation of why this form of a means to an end is used for there is no more final end than death itself. The stress and effects of battle are apparent in the soldiers at times in the movie. So we, as the audience, can be appalled and shocked of the realness of the film we have just seen but at the same time we must not forget that there are those who did not have the luxury of watching this action and human interaction on the silver screen for there are those who lived and died in similar fashion. By showing an almost true to life account of what occurred in a particular aspect of this war we learn that those men in women who serve in the military today and in yester years are people who should be admired for the great sacrifices they are willing to take so that the United States can remain as we know it. This is a stressful situation that is almost leads to violence.
