The Analysis and Design of a New System
Enterprise: One of the three 'sub-businesses' or 'bases' of Innovative Plastics, divided into three countries, France, England and Spain.Technical issues: Issues/problems with the 'hardware side' of Innovative PlasticsPeople issues: Issues with employees of the company (ethical and lawful issues) Innovative Plastics co-operative is a business with enterprises in England, France and Spain. The aim of this report id to develop a new computer system to integrate into the company, supporting all areas of their business activities. Innovative Plastics' existing system is not fulfilling all their business needs and is resulting in several problems falling into two main categories, 'Technical' issues and 'People' issues, listed below:Poor communication, a major problem for Innovative Plastics, is both poor internally, i.e. within the enterprise in England (for example), and externally, i.e. between all three enterprises in the different countries. This leads to other problems, such as an unharmonious set of working practices.
This will lower costs (so rather than having a printer connected to each terminal, one printer could be shared by a floor of terminals for example, lowering initial costs of purchasing the printer(s), and reducing maintenance costs in the future). Working practices 'out of sink':Working practices used by the three enterprises in England, France and Spain are working more as separate groups against each other, rather than together as one company. This requires them to implement a new one, capable of handling large amounts of data/processing, ready for the imminent expansion of their company. However, scanners and touch-screens are also options. Therefore, a more stable link to the overseas enterprises would be to use a telephone line. Output peripherals will include monitors and printers, to display and provide hardcopies of information stored/entered into the computer. This will mean that as soon as a user has access to a file it is locked, blocking anyone else anywhere (from within the same enterprise, or from enterprises abroad) from gaining access to the data whilst it is being worked upon. However, it is incredibly expensive to buy. Security also needs to be considered here. For example, Pet Sharp, the Sales Manager at Innovative Plastics in England finds that keeping track of and accessing product, customer and order details difficult using the existing system. However, employees of the company in ALL enterprises MUST be kept up-to-date with decisions made and changes occurring, as the computerisation of Innovative Plastics may cause concern as to job-loss (employees put out of jobs as computers take over what they do) and computer 'illiteracy' (where their employees find learning how to use the new system difficult). Therefore, office automation software is not enough, as it will not completely satisfy their needs. Floppy disks and CD-ROMS could also be used to store smaller amounts of data. Touch-screens mainly apply to the UK enterprise, in that they could be used alongside manufacturing to control the computers manufacturing the products, rather than the minicomputers with a keyboard and mouse.
