Earl Simmons, better known to the rap world as "DMX" or "Dark Man X" has released four albums since his debut in 1998. His style of rap has been compared to rappers such as Tupac Shakur and kept him atop the rap music charts. His songs have earned him several musical nominees such as Grammy's and MTV Music Awards nominees. His musical prowess and complex story telling wound up with tight beats have progressed since his first album in 1998. His first album entitled "Its Dark and Hell is Hot" and his fourth and latest album released in late 2001 entitled "The Great Depression" are two examples of how great his work is and praised. DMX's songs have been atop the musical charts such as Billboard. His first album was released in1998 and was entitled" Its Dark and Hell is Hot". His musical prowess and complex story telling earned him a spot atop the Billboard music charts with hits such as "Ruff Ryders' Anthem" and "How's It Goin' Down". In the song entitled "You Could Be Blind" he raps about walking down the street and seeing how people around him have changed. He raps about his wife and kids and even his deceased grandmother. " In this album he raps more of inner city life than the business aspect of music. " (James) Out of both these great albums I would choose the first one, "Its Dark and Hell is Hot" because I like it more when he raps of the cooperate world from the outside in and not from the inside out as he does in his fourth album "The Great Depression. In the song "When I'm Nothing" he raps more of the good points of being out of the inner city and is not so much rough and rugged anymore. His image from a felon to a family man is noticed right away. In his fourth album, "The Great Depression" he speaks more of the inner city and not the streets of Brooklyn or "Yonkers" where he was brought up. His image in his debut album changes a bit to the forth as it seems he himself has become a product of corporate music industries. In the song Look Through My Eyes" he appeals more to the people looking from the outside in. This album, though highly praised only received three stars by Rolling Stone while "Its Dark and Hell is Hot" received four stars by Rolling Stone. " (Kokotis) Both albums to me portray the life and times of a young man and the struggles he went through to get to where he is now. DMX explains what its like having the police after you and growing up neglected by both parents. " With lyrics such as these it shows he wasn't all about himself. In the song entitled "Damien III" he tries to get away from the deal he first made with Satan in the first album. " Its Dark and Hell is Hot" is an album that shows the tough times this rapper went through to be where he is now.
