Victorian Era
The Victorian Era was a time of wide extremes. elegant city streets, gas lamps, and in contrast grinding poverty. It was also a time of exploration and invention. With their pioneer spirit wild frontier towns were born across the world. and with their flare and ingenuity the Victorians took with them their values and elegance.the term Victorian, which literally describes things and events in the reign of Queen Victoria (1837-1901), conveyed connotations of "prudish," "repressed," and "old fashioned." Although such associations have some basis in fact, they do not adequately indicate the nature of this complex, paradoxical age that was a second English Renaissance. Like Elizabethan England, Victorian England saw great expansion of wealth, power, and culture. Dickens was hired to write short texts to accompany a series of humorous sporting illustrations by Robert Seymour, a popular artist. In 1834, still a newspaper reporter, he adopted the soon to be famous pseudonym "Boz. In fact, this age of Darwin, Marx, and Freud appears to be not only the first that experienced modern problems but also the first that attempted modern solutions. Dulcamara! runs; a burlesque of Donzetti's L'Elisir d'Amore, this is Gilbert's first acknowledged play. Like Trial by Jury, it is another successful Gilbert and Sullivan joint-endeavor. Early experiments include hastily-wrought but successful lyrics for pantomimes: Millward's King Solomon, and also his Harlequin Prince Paragon and the Queen of the Valley of Perpetual Spring, and Hush A Bye, Baby, on the Treetop; or, Harlequin Fortunia, King of Frog Island, and the Magic Top of Lowther Arcade. It also had five thousand miles of railroad track to easily transport goods. All of this enabled middle class workers to be ambitious owners and inventors of products and factories. Seymour committed suicide after the second number, however, and under these peculiar circumstances Dickens altered the initial conception of The Pickwick Papers , which became a novel he became editor of Bentley's Miscellany . People loved the works of the well-known and sought their company when it was possible. She acquired money, skilled workers, and formed a government that couldn't interfere with business relations. David Thomson asserts that Sullivan, with the likes of Sterndale Bennet, Parry, Stanford, and Mackenzie, is representative of the period's emerging "particularly English school of music," which paralleled the renewed power of art and art criticism during the mid-Victorian era (Penguin's England in the Nineteenth Century, 117). More than anything else what makes Victorians Victorian is their sense of social responsibility, a basic attitude that obviously differentiates them from their immediate predecessors, the Romantics.
