Emotions In The Raven

In ÒThe RavenÓ by Edgar Allan Poe, the reader sees the internal torment of a man in mourning for the lost love of a maiden, named Lenore that has died. The narrator expresses a sea of emotions over the vision of a raven haunting and taunting him. As the narrator sits in his chamber he only seems to notice the negativity of his surroundings in a depressive state of mind over his lost Lenore. ÒOnce upon a midnight dreary, while I pondered, weak and weary.Ó He was, as many people seem to be when they are depressed, in a calm state nearly sleeping. He then was disturbed by a tapping

At this point he is desperately trying to get answers from the raven as to where it really came from and whether he will ever see Lenore again. At this point in the poem one may clearly seehis very painful condition and state of mind as he wishfully whispers the word ÒLenore. The narrator is frustrated because he wanted the raven to tell him that he would in time be able to see Lenore once again, but the raven simply answered Ònevermore. Ó When the narrator went to answer the door there was no one there. The narrator knows that the ravenÕs statement means that he will never have a moment of rest from the sadness that he feels over LenoreÕs death. Ó As the raven and the narrator talk back and forth the narrator starts to question what the raven means when he always replies Ònevermore. Because of this he states, ÒDeep into the darkness peering, long I stood there wondering, fearing,Ó only to question his sanity until he heard another noise. The narrator feels confused at this point in the poem. ÒAnd the silken, sad, uncertain rustling of each purple curtain thrilled me- filled me with fantastic terrors never felt before. When the raven answers him with ÒnevermoreÓ he becomes so frustrated that he asks the bird to leave. noise and slowly grew from slight excitement to fear and nervousness over the commotion. He goes from being depressed in the beginning because he cannot see Lenore anymore, to being frustrated at the raven in the end of the poem. Ó In ÒThe RavenÓ the narrator experiences many different emotions in a very short period of time. He becomes desperate in his quest to know when or if he will ever get to see her again.
