Field
As I decided upon a place to do my field experience, I decided that there was no better place to do so then at my high school. Seneca Valley High School is where I attended my secondary education. My major is secondary education in the area of social science so I decided that I would attend a 12th grade history class taught by one of my former teachers Mr. Mike Latera. The class that he teaches is American History. The first thing that I observed as I entered the classroom was how it was physically organized. Strangely to me his desk was set in the back of the room with all of the desks facing away from it. The desks were arranged in five rows with six desks in each row. All the rows faced the front of the room where the chalkboard reached across the room with the left side of the room being all tinted windows with a view of trees and the football field. At the back of the room there was a bookcase full of books ranging from the Civil War, to Vietnam and many other Historical books. Mr. Latera is a teacher that likes to move around a lot when he teaches. He started at the front of the room and moved a lot from side to side and used his hands when he was not writing on the board. I feel that his mobility caused the s
Latera and seemed to enjoy his class also. Especially since I am one of his former students and always did enjoy his class, which is why I chose to evaluate his class. Within the lecture the teacher related the depression to other times in American history where we as a nation were almost in depression and also talked about the recession that the nation is facing at this time in our economy. This being a class full of seniors in high school they were permitted to dismiss themselves from class to use the restroom with the use of a hallway pass which was placed at the front of the room on the edge of the chalkboard. They were done on the board in an outline form. He lectured on the great depression using notes and also referring to sections in the book that the students were supposed to have read. The lecture notes were kept simple for the students to elaborate on them further themselves. As the he lectured he asked the students questions on the things that they were have supposed to of read. The more that they got right, the more points of extra credit they would get. Latera's class was a very relaxed atmosphere that was very easy to learn in and enjoyed monitoring his class. Latera in high school was that he was very vocal. Most of his lesson was done on the chalkboard with the use of notes.
