Andrew Croswell

In 1766, Andrew Croswell authored “Free Forgiveness of Spiritual Debts”. It was printed by McAlpine on Boston’s Marlborough Street. During that period of time many chaotic events resulted in the Colonial opposition to Great Britain. The rights of the colonists were slowly being changed and the restrictions by the parliament were becoming more and more intolerable. In 1764, the colonists were submissive, and were weakly pleading for self-indulgence. This small fire of anger was becoming more and more apparent as the rights were slowly withdrawn. On October 19, 1765 the Stamp Act depicted the colonists as having to give in to the view of Great Britain. This policy angered the colonists very much, and was another reason for the transition of the colonists’ rights. When the Declaration Act was passed in March of 1766, many colonies were attempting to claim that they were separating from England. The Parliament denounced the attempt at independence and passed the law to show that the colonists were still in British rule. Again, the colonists were enraged and eventually resisted the British confines over the colonies.

He also goes on to state “Christ was equally willing to be made a curse for us. But his Father and he had but one will. One thing that I did find particularly interesting was how in every word where the letter s was, the letter f was put in place of it. The events in history I was mentioning earlier might have cause people to be on edge and searching for something to keep them grounded. Although contrary to the beliefs of Edwards when it came to forgiveness, Croswell stated that even people with debt, who were carrying the heavy burden of sin, can and will be forgiven. Obviously, some of the words were rather hard to see and read because the slides were so worn down. Like Edwards, he uses repetition of words to portray his thoughts and feelings about the forgiveness of our sins.

I feel that Croswell directed this document to the ministers in the church at that time. I don’t know if it was the actual slides that were put together that way or if it was the way they wrote during that period of time. Although it was directed to ministers, I also feel that it was directed toward the major sinners. The document by Croswell reminded me of Edwards, in the sense that both authors expressed concern about spiritual fate and tried to reinvigorate people emotionally. Croswell used these quotes to rationalize his thoughts and feelings about God’s grace and forgiveness. The type of style that was used was much to the likes of other 18th century writers. This shows that Croswell was extremely spiritual, much like another 18th century writer we read about, Jonathan Edwards. One thing I specifically noticed was the use of quotes from the Bible.
