The Book I will write my research paper on is Candide or Optimism by Voltaire. I will begin by telling you about Voltaire and then discuss the bokk with you. Franciois-Marie Arouet de Voltaire was born into a middle class family. His father was a minor treasury official. Voltaire was educated by the Jesuits at the College Louis-le-Grand. From 1711 to 1713 he studided law and also worked as a secretary to the French ambassador in Holland before focusing completely on writing. Voltaire's essays were not readily accepted by the authorities but he was fond of attacking the government and the catholic church which cause him to be exiled and get sent to prison many times. In 1716 he was exiled from paris for five months and was also imprisoned in the Bastille for the lampoons of the Regency from 1717 to 1718. During this time he started using the name Voltaire in his writings. Voltaire died in Paris on May 30, 1778 as the undisputed leader of the Age of Enlightenment. His many writings left and impression on the people of his time. He will always be known to us as a French writer, the embodiment of the 18th century and a crusader against tyranny and bigotry. Now I begin my discussion of Candide or Optimism. I read this book for my Wo

Through the harsh realities of life he eventually comes out of his insanity and sees that his way of life in his modern world is outdated and obsolete. In Gargantua and Pantagruel, Rabelais mentions a series of text books which are a part of the sort of educational curriculum that he is satirizing. By having this character take on such a pessimistic tone, he directly contradicts the obviously over-optimistic tone of Candide. This is a very intellectual yet exciting book. Through his travels he is shown the error of other men's ways, serving to remind him of his own sins and to put him back on the right path in life. the work keeps us from three great evils, boredom, vice, and poverty. " with chapter three of Candide, "How Candide Escaped from the Bulgars, and What Became of Him". One common literary technique is the author's use of one or more of his characters as his 'voice' to speak out the authors views on a certain subject. The times and issues may be quite different, but the writing style works just as well for him as it did all the way back to the twelfth century. It is in this journey that Candide's outlook on life is challenged; he is forced to become less optimistic about this world being the best of all possible worlds. On page 1594, Candide is asking a gentleman about whether everything is for the best in the physical world as well as the moral universe. In Candide, Voltaire uses many different writing techniques which can also be found in the works of Cervantes, Alighieri, Rabelais and Moliere.
