Destiny, can it be escaped?
The play Oedipus the king, by Sophocles, displays how a person cannot escape fate. It doesn't matter what decisions are made, it will all benefit towards the destined situation that was already planned out before their own birth. Oedipus made decisions in his life, and didn't know that he was part of a prophecy, but no matter what he did or who tried to get in his way, the prophecy was fulfilled. Oedipus had been living a lie and was happy with that life, but in the end he found out that truth and realized the truth really hurts. He had to accept his fate and live with his embarrassment and shame. There was one thing Oedipus didn't realize; maybe there was something going wrong with his plan to stay away from the parents he loved so much. Oedipus knew of the prophecy that had been said before he was even born. The prophet itself would be shameful if it were to happen to anyone. Oedipus revealed his fate to a messenger telling him, "I am destined to mate with my mother, and shed my father's blood with my own hands..." (Page 69) The prophecy was suppose to come true at any cost. Oedipus learns at this point that the man he thought was his father really wasn't. The messenger had told Oedipus that he gave him to Polybus (
" (Page 56-57) The place where Laius was killed by a supposed group of robbers was the same place Oedipus had killed people that he didn't know. The one thing was no matter how hard his wife tried to keep the truth from him; it still ended up coming out. He could have talked to his parents or maybe asked around before jumping to conclusions and just going off without a plan on mind. There were many times that Oedipus could have known the truth, but it was as one specific time that it had to happen. Oedipus had many decisions to choose between when he decided he had to get away from those he thought were his parents. That "good advice" of yours is trying my patience. He needed more proof than what was said by the messenger. When he realized his mistake it was too late for him to alter the outcome of his events. The fate that was set forth upon Oedipus was becoming clearer in his head that maybe the prophecy had come true and he wasn't sure. He chose to kill those men that day, and because of his decision his fate became reality. She told him to just forget about it to protect them from humiliation. If he had found out about his father he could have prevented the prophecy.
