A Man Called Horse

In "A Man called Horse." Horse will be forced to learn new languages and customs. It took him four months to learn the Crow language and be able to communicate with the tribe as he attempts to be like them and earn their respect, as well as trust. He changes the way he behaves in order to show the tribe that can be an important asset, and needed to them. He remembers his thoughts of actually living as a human. He self-mutilates himself to appear more like the tribe. To show his feelings of sorrow over the lost of a loved one, Horse cuts slashes in his arms. Others think of him as only as a captive and a prisoner. They think of him as something outside the tribe. His actions change in the story because he will be learning discipline; he knows that the tribe sees him as a slave. Everything about him changes, torn from a well thought man, to someone that has to fight for food with an animal. This man has gone from as well as it gets, to low life scum. But in the end when she had nothing left, he stayed with her for three years until she passed on. He respected the Crow and their people in a way; the family member he so dearly hated as an example. He went from growing up as a well treated man, to the respect of evil, to the slightest bit respected, to a passionate, loving man to his family.
