Mending Wall

Robert Frost's poem "Mending Wall" was considered to be one of his favorite works. The poem is about the construction of a rock wall between two people's property and the significance of the establishment of boundaries with the outer and inner worlds of a person. Frost's poem shows an appreciation for nature as well as the importance of sharing the world. The two people in this poem build a rock wall to define the property line between their lands, but actually may be building it to end arguments. It seems that the chore of mending the wall takes place once a year. One neighbor does the task because he enjoys doing it and sees a tradition. The other seems as though he does it just to go along with his neighbor's wishes. One person seems to be dominant over the other. He informs his neighbor about the task of mending the wall in order to re

Another reference made by the narrator dealing with this same idea can be seen in the line "He is all pine and I am apple orchard. " seems to imply that they do not talk and the building of a wall promotes this non- communication. The narrator appears to take the opposite view by saying, "Why do they make good neighbors? Isn't it where there are cows? But here there are no cows. It seems to tell us that we should look past obvious physical barriers and learn to communicate with others and be able to look over the wall. The wall between the neighbors has apparently been in existence for quite some time. The quote "Good fences make good neighbors. " This is not as much a reference to physical distance, but a lack of connection between them. There also seems to be a distance and lack of communication between the two. One can see an aged, sun worn skinned man slowly completing the labor intensive task of carrying stones to rebuild the fence. One says he will reach his neighbor over the hill. The narrator of the poem does not seem to see the importance or have the same feelings about building a physical structure between the two neighbors. " suggests that the person carrying the stones is an old person who has been doing this task year after year. Another boundary is shown when he says, "We keep the wall between us as we go. " which seems to mean that a physical structure is necessary to keep their lives private.
