Greek Mythology

Greek mythology is a body of stories and myths developed by ancient Greeks concerning their gods and goddesses. Greek mythology is a wide variety of narrative material. Some of the myths are used purely for entertainment purposes. Other myths are are more serious and used to explain the religion of the early Greeks. Today Greek mythology is known as the oldest form of religion in Greece. Greek mythology was the basic belief of the early Greeks. Early Greece was polytheistic which meant they worshipped many gods like the many gods on mount Olympus(Graves 34). The king of all of the Greek gods was Zeus. Zeus was the most important of all gods although he had not always held the title as the king of the gods. Zeus stole his position from the former king his father Coronus king of the titans and the universe who ironically stole his title as king from his own father Uranus . Uranus and Rhea were the two first gods. Now the titans (ruled by king Coronus ) were the rulers of Greece and the entire universe before the Olympians( Ruled by king Zeus). The titans were god of supreme strength and stature. Coronus the original King wanted to be sure that he would reign as king forever so he killed all of his children by swallowing them

Each of them picked a section to rule over . There were an equal number of male and female gods (goddesses) there were six men and six women. The most famous of these was Hercules the son of Zeus. The Olympians were the rulers of Olympus hence the name Olympians they were twelve gods that were all related either directly to Zeus the king by blood or by marriage. They also needed answers for things that occurred in everyday life. And there were more than enough to pray to because they numbered over 1000. Also on the board of the top gods were the brothers of Zeus Hades and Poseidon they helped to takeover the kingdom of their father Coronus. Coronus was finally caught by his sons and was done away with for the last time (Green R. The fall of Greek Mythology gave way to Christianity . He also used the mighty eagle as his messenger. The leader to the women and the Queen of the throne was the wife of Zeus Hera . Zeus and his brothers divided up his fathers kingdom between them . there were gods of wisdom fire water and hate etc.
