Comparison Essay (Diary Anne Frank)

In 1942, when the Nazi’s began to invade their country, the Frank family tried to escape by going into hiding in an attic of a warehouse. Otto and Edith Frank and their daughters Margot and Anne hid in this building on the Prinsengracht, Amsterdam. They were later joined by Mr. and Mrs. Van Daan, their son Peter and Mr. Dussel. During the hiding period Anne Frank kept a diary throughout their horrible ordeal. In it she described daily life in the back of the Secret Annex; the isolation and the fear of discovery. Never seeing sunshine, never seeing flowers, never seeing friends, or knowing whether they were dead or alive. He witnessed the starvation, the beatings of innocent people, and the tortures, his faith in God begins to waiver. When Wiesel first comes to the concentration camp and sees all the walking skeletons, he can’t believe that this is real. At first Elie wasn't sure of his faith because if there was a God, then why did he create the situation that they were in. They stayed locked up in the attic of the warehouse for almost twenty-five months, never being able to step outside. Wiesel changed from a religious Jew to a broken young man who doubted his belief in God. At first the two families stuck together, and were later eventually separated. Once they reached Buchenwald his father passed away at the camp from dysentery. In the beginning of the story Elie and his family were living in Sighet, an area in Germany, until they were taken away to the concentration camps. In the end of the book Ellie loses his father in a forty-two mile march to Buchenwald. Elie was told by his father to never lose faith in his religion it would help him through everything, and keep him strong. Elie Wiesel wasn’t as fortunate as the Frank and Van Dann’s family. Anne and Margot died of typhes, only a few weeks before this concentration camp was liberated. This book is also filled with acts of kindness and compassion amid the degradation and violence. The weather was painfully cold, and snow fell heavily.
