This journal article tries to answer the question of whether cigarette smoking actually causes stress or not. Although most smokers claim that the act of smoking is relaxing, the actual addiction to the drug nicotine may cause stress on a person. The participants would fill out a scale stating their stress levels. The study suggest that if more people new that smoking actually added stress to peoples lives that this information may help stop people from starting at all. It seems when they are without nicotine they are stressed because there bodies are addicted to the drug. During the study it was found that initially the individuals stress levels actually increased. It seems that the study showed that these smokers only felt calm when they were actually smoking a cigarette. They found that after three months of quitting nicotine that most participants started to report themselves to have less stress. This is most likely because of the addiction that these people have for nicotine. It then makes it seem like Nicotine calms them, but it is only because they are feeding that addiction. Smoking would then produce a false calmness. By six months of completely not smoking there was a much more noticeable change in the level of stress these former smokers felt. Smokers who merely cut down did not receive the benefits of reduced stress levels. During this time researcher would note whether they had resumed smoking or not. persons stress level when they refrained from smoking. This study was done over a six-month period of time.
