Planning a Education & Career in Nursing Nurses wanted... Nurses Needed... When on a search engine looking for jobs or careers, sadly that is what pops up most often. "In 1996, there were almost 2 million nurses employed in the United States making this field the largest of all healthcare occupations" (Cosgrove 370). However, now in the year 2001 we are on a shortage of nurses. From once being the largest of all healthcare occupations to being the most needed, this is what help inspire me to pursue a career in nursing. A career in nursing is a lot more satisfying if it is planned for ahead of time. Planning ahead can help one understand the type of work environment a nurse can look forward to. Planning ahead can also help with the changes so that one can avoid getting burned out and stressed. When planning out your goals, one should know what they want and know what preparation is needed for the position they are applying by getting the education and qualifications needed. Before one chooses a career in nursing, it is always good to do some research. One might want to ask themselves if this career is really for them? Are they motivated to achieve a higher position in their career? Are they willing to


Nurses who work in hospitals, nursing homes, or as private duty nurses must be able to work evenings, weekends, and holidays. Which of the training programs one chooses depends on they're career goal. If one is patient who likes to take care and help others and is willing to work long hours, and can be a good problem solver and be assertive and at the same time confident during a time of crisis then this might be a job that one might look into. degree in nursing may be completed in a relatively short period of time, varying from two calendar years to two academic years. Some are offered education reimbursement, childcare, and bonuses. However, most of the nursing Vu 4courses require nearly full-time study. One must also have good and physical stamina. Full-time nurses are given flexible work schedules as well as health and life insurance. Employers also have reduced demand by hiring support staff to perform lesser skilled or non-nursing duties and taken other measures to make better use of nurses. When one becomes a nurse one needs the ability to follow orders, use good judgment in emergencies, and cope Vu 6with human suffering.
